The England striker and the club's latest signing will continue to work on their strength and sharpness at Stanford University, sitting out the friendly at the Rose Bowl
Daniel Sturridge and Georginio Wijnaldum will not be involved in Liverpool’s opening International Champions Cup test against Chelsea as they continue to work on a specialised fitness programme in Palo Alto.
The duo, along with Divock Origi and Christian Benteke, have not travelled to Pasadena in an effort to elevate their strength and sharpness at Stanford University.
Nathaniel Clyne will also be missing against Antonio Conte's men at the Rose Bowl as he nurses a tight hamstring, which is expected to clear in a matter of days.
It was decided that Sturridge would be best served engaging in extra sessions rather than facing his former club, but the England international is likely to play a part against AC Milan in Santa Clara on Saturday.
Wijnaldum, Origi and Benteke joined the group late and need more time on the training pitch to match the fitness level of their team-mates.
Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are all set to start against Chelsea, while Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Adam Lallana should make their first appearances of pre-season.
